Jazz: A Symphony of Space by Yi-Lun Hsu

Interior Design That Harmonizes Modern Living with Nature

Discover how Yi-Lun Hsu's 'Jazz' project blends raw textures and sophisticated technology to create an interior design masterpiece.

Yi-Lun Hsu's 'Jazz' is not merely an interior design project; it's an embodiment of lifestyle, comfort, and aesthetic innovation. The design, which serves as the living space for a man and his feline companion, is an exploration of the WELL Building Standard™, ensuring a habitat that promotes health and well-being. The 165 square meter space in Hsinchu City, Taiwan, is a testament to the meticulous coordination between design intent and construction execution, culminating in November 2023.

The design's unique properties lie in its ability to capture the essence of jazz music—improvisational, bold, and deeply personal. The gray-black color palette, accentuated by the textures of exposed concrete, metal, and glass, sets a stage for the reddish-brown wood grain to inject warmth into the cool ambiance. This interplay of materials creates a space that is both rugged and refined, mirroring the improvisational diversity of jazz.

Yi-Lun Hsu's approach to realizing 'Jazz' involved integrating advanced technologies to enhance the living environment. The space boasts an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV), concealed dehumidification, and air purification systems, alongside a whole-house water purification setup. These elements work in concert with natural light from large windows and a radiant floor heating system, all while utilizing materials that minimize formaldehyde presence.

The interaction with the space is as intuitive as it is innovative. The entrance features a shoe cabinet with drilled holes in lumber core plywood, celebrating the material's natural form. The dining and living areas embrace a wabi-sabi aesthetic, with an exposed ceiling that honors the building's original character. Artistic paints and strategic lighting complement the open space, while staggered shelves serve as a playful pathway for the resident cat.

Yi-Lun Hsu's research into creating a stress-relieving environment is evident in the central courtyard's open desk area and the adjacent bookshelves with slanted boards. The changing room's reeded glass partitions allow for privacy without sacrificing natural light, and the aluminum column system inside maximizes storage flexibility.

'Jazz' is a design that speaks to the soul, much like its musical namesake. It is a space that resonates with individuality and comfort, a place where technology and nature coalesce to create a serene urban retreat. The project's recognition with a Bronze A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2024 is a testament to Yi-Lun Hsu's vision and the transformative power of thoughtful design.

Yi-Lun Hsu's 'Jazz' stands as a beacon of modern interior design, where every element orchestrates a harmonious living experience.
